Hello, lovely author! Welcome to the squee-filled insanity that is my FFFX letter. For each pair tag, I have tried to explain why I love it (apologies for the incoherence at times), and then I’ve dumped a handful of prompts and ideas for those pairs beneath. Those prompts are entirely optional and simply a jumping off point. If you have a better idea, which, tbh, you more than likely will, then run with it.
I am not averse to mixing and matching my fandom pairings with my OW noms, and if there is more than one pair within a fandom, by all means make one (or more) of the others a background pairing. I am an inveterate multi shipper. When it comes to AUs, you absolutely can’t go wrong with any kind of IN SPACE!/steampunk/Star Trek/sentient robots setting. I’m also rather fond of quirky modern twists like urban fantasy; eco-builders; farming; K&R firm; nobility/bodyguard; making everyone work for MI-6; Pirates!; Mills & Boon/Harlequin romance style; 1920s-Inspired Science Fiction; and the MOST important one of all, Everyone Lives/Nobody Dies. I think that last tag should be applied to everything.
So, onto fandoms. Length of entry does not indicate extra favour, only that I went off on a tangent or got interrupted. Also, I'm likely to keep editing this.
Original Work - I honestly don’t know how I managed to whittle it down to just these tags, as there were SO many good ones in there. But these are the ones which jumped out. Feel free to take one of these tags and apply it to one of my ships as an epic AU.
Brooding Grumpy Guy Who Thought He Was Straight/Pretty Sunshine Gay Friend
To be totally honest, this dynamic encompasses most of my ships. I adore the Grumpy/Sunshine dynamic. Dude doesn’t have to think he’s straight, tbh - he can be entirely gay and totally in denial that his beautiful, happy-go-lucky friend would even look at a lumbering grouch like him. (Think Geralt/Jaskier, McCoy/Kirk, Bond/Q etc)
Chosen Hero/Big Bad Evil Guy who seems a lot less evil than the quest-giver claimed (m/m)
Who decides that the Big Bad is really the bad one after all? Is he freeing the serfs? Taking down Big Corporation? Oppressing capitalism? Unionising the workers?
I see a younger Chosen Hero here, someone maybe a little naive who’s been groomed to go out and fight the fights that someone else picks for him. Big Bad is an older, wiser, silver fox who can span the gap between lawful evil and chaotic good.
Maybe the chosen one gets hurt on his quest, and wakes up to find the bad guy is looking after him, has taken him into his castle/house/cave lair on an island to rest and recuperate.
Human Intergalactic Emperor/Alien Intergalactic Emperor He Marries To End The War
Arranged Marriage, please and thank youuuuu. Give me enemies who may have fought one another, maybe still even bear the scars from those fights. Sumptuous weddings, alien world building, diplomatic conventions dealing with ending the war - this pair has so many possibilities.
Galactic emperors could just as easily be generals or princes or kings, it could be an arranged marriage by their councils at the end of the war, by their overlords/parents/prime ministers. They could have agreed to it themselves, just to stop the fighting and save their people. What kind of war does this end? Was it a space battle? Land based? For resources or boundaries or that one particular moon? Maybe you want to gloss over the actual war, and focus on the marriage and how two enemies become friends and then lovers because that is a truly marvellous trope. Whatever you choose, weave me a tale of different planets and customs and physiology and worlds and how the sun of the alien emperor’s solar system shines so very different on the oceans of his planet when compared with the human’s sun.
Old Male Human Space General/His Male Alien General Old Friend
I love this prompt so much, I have already written it but I want more. More old friends with epic history, more pining, more loyalty and faithfulness, more conquering their differences, more finding love when they think they are past that point.
This pairing is ripe for glorious world building - does one of them give up their home planet for the other? How is the culture/language/food different? Is he accepted or does he have to fight for his place there? Shunned or welcomed as a novelty? Do they have family, children or ex-partners, siblings or very elderly parents, cousins who disapprove, a delighted foster-child who is happy at seeing their father find true love at last? So much fluff potential, domesticity and culture to explore.
Pirate Captain/His Navy Captain Nemesis
Pirates! Tell a story of tall ships and daring adventures, glorious sea battles and how these two men meet and fight and fall in love. I’m a sucker for a sword fight, billowy white shirts and tight leather pants. I mean, who isn’t?
Maybe one of them is hurt and rescued by the other, brought back to health and then feelings happen?
Does the Navy Captain capture the Pirate’s ship (or vice versa) and is impressed by the fortitude of that ship’s leadership? Do they somehow end up trapped by Spanish marauders in the cove of a tropical island and have to reluctantly work together?
Perhaps a storm shipwrecks them on an island and they have to combine resources to survive.
If they meet landside, is it perhaps at a formal ball where they are introduced without titles or backstory, and do not realise that the other man is their nemesis, and instead are incredibly drawn to each other. Identity porn ftw.
Scholar of ancient history/Scholar in enemy land with whom they correspond (M/M)
This pairing is so intriguing. Where is the ancient history scholar? What era do they live in? And the ‘enemy land’ could have so many definitions. My mind immediately went to a scholar of ancient Egypt or the Middle East, as I have a deep interest in all things Arabic - I focused on Islam in the World Religions part of my first degree. I love the language and the way the cultures which speak it are so similar and yet so diverse. Is it modern day and are they writing from opposite sides of a barbed wire fence? Is it Victorian, and a London based scholar is corresponding with someone in Tripoli or Sevastopol? Perhaps it’s a First or Second World War based fic in which our intrepid scholar has a German penpal. Or even earlier, or an entirely fictions fantasy land.
This would make for an amazing epistolic fic, with our scholars’ letters to one another, the odd newspaper article thrown in for colour and context, a diary entry at the end when they finally met after escaping from the war/ending the war with sweeping declarations of love at first sight - even though they fell in love years before through simple words on the page. You could alternate the POV, have one go missing and the other risk everything to go find him. Are they corresponding to learn about the other’s culture? To discuss their own specialism (medicine, history, archaeology, alchemy…) and things evolve from there? Or is there a suspicion by others that one of them is spying on the other? (I would rather them not be spies, but genuine scholars, however the other academics can gossip all they like!)
Silver Fox Captain/His Gentleman First Officer
Love me a competent, kick-ass silver fox (as you may or may not have guessed, if you’ve read the above. And as I love me some angst, pining and smutty-fluffy resolution, we could have a seduction by one or the other, in which feelings develop and one thinks the other is above him whilst the other can’t make a move for fear of pulling rank… You get my drift.
Whether this is a space Captain, a modern Army captain, a Victorian steampunk captain - it’s totally up to you. The Captain can be a major or a general or an admiral too. If you want to use my PacRim request above and give me General Pentecost and his first officer Hansen, I would definitely not stop you. Ditto Captain Mallory and Lieutenant Tanner etc. As I may have said before, I am a trope ho.
Steampunk Airship Captain/Travelling Padre (M/M) (OW)
One part of worldbuilding I love (apart from the food!) is the moral compass of that particular world. What are the religions like? Are they most secular in parts, highly formal in others, only hold with a single diety or have an entire pantheon to choose from?
Why does our captain pick up the padre (vicar/monk/imam/rabbi/druid/priest)? Where is the padre going to or from? What’s his history? Has he always been itinerant or is he running from or towards something in particular? Does our captain feel the need for some kind of guidance?
Honestly, you can pick any religion you like, combine any number of doctrines or holy books, invent something completely from scratch. My only real DNW for this paring is bucket loads of homophobic angst. Build me a world where this religion accepts and even encourages people to marry for love, regardless of their faith.
Oh, and maybe the padre cooks? XD
Runaway Countess/Ship Captain/Ship Captain's First Officer (F/M/M) (OW)
I am passing fond of a good OT3, of various combinations, so do with this what you will. Some kind of runaway royalty/nobility, who hides or stows away or gets employed as a cook or a maid or similar on a ship (sailing ship, warship, airship, space ship, take your pick!) and how she gets to know the captain and his first officer. Are they a pair and she becomes part of them? Maybe they pine for each other with stoic resignation and she finds it blindingly obvious. I honestly don’t know why this one jumped out - just run with it.
James Bond - Craig Movies
James Bond/M | Gareth Mallory (Bond - Craig)
M | Gareth Mallory/Bill Tanner (Bond - Craig)
James Bond/Bill Tanner (Bond - Craig)
Bill Tanner is a BAMF and no one can convince me otherwise. He deserves all the love. Put him front and centre, let him shake off the grey little bureaucrat image and shine, and I will love you forever. We're talking competence kink really, aren't we? Mallory is just as much a quietly competent BAMF as Tanner and I absolute adore the idea of them working together, learning to trust one another and rely on each other, with a slowly growing attraction that they both try to ignore.
And, yes, I know, I’m getting boring with this but god, give me any and all of these idiots, in any damned combination you see fit. You can throw Eve into a multi-mix by all means, but please leave female-M out of it. Dame Judy is inviolable, I’m afraid. Again, not keen on the villains (but I guess that’s covered by my DNW of manipulative dynamics) but throw in as many OCs as you like. 5+1 where they do the spy thing and sleep with anyone and everyone for Queen and country before finally making a match where there are feelings involved. I don’t know, Bond is legendary for his refusal to keep it in his pants. I have a feeling it’s an MI-6 thing. It’s not the kind of job you can afford to gossip about with someone outside MI-6 so there’s probably more fraternisation than entirely ideal.
Canon set mission fic or retirement fic would be wonderful, as would any number of AUs. Go wild.
I’d love to see Tanner moving in with Mallory, a little slice of domestic life in amongst the double-oh insanity that they deal with every day.
Maybe mission fic, where Tanner is sent aboard on a cake walk and ends up caught up in something dramatic which necessitates Bond to the rescue, and a very unimpressed Mallory is forced to examine his feelings for his Chief-of-Staff. Feel free to throw Bond and Tanner into bed together to trigger Mallory’s epiphany - I am not averse to a little angst and Tanner’s “I only did it because I didn’t think you were interested”, as long as there’s a happy ending. (Yes, I already wrote this but would love to see another take on it)
Give me Tanner & Q bickering in Q branch whilst Mallory and Bond look on, bemused. Background Bond/Q is always welcome too. Hell, mix and match any of these guys as long as everyone ends up satisfied.
I probably should have nommed the OT3 of Bond/Tanner/Mallory, as that gives us even more options but I would honestly be delighted with either of these pairs. Give me the whole MI6 circus with Q and Eve and insane gadgets and some casefic, or soft domesticity with Bill and Gareth. Some Mallory backstory perhaps, or some future/retirement fic would also be bloody marvellous.
Pacific Rim - Hercules Hansen/Stacker Pentecost (Pacific Rim)
I am a petrol head and mech fiend and a lover of all things silver fox - give me all the Jaeger goodness and the story of these two old friends who have known each other forever. Giant robots are my kryptonite - I have adored Transformers since the first cartoons - and seeing Gypsy Danger stride across my screen was yet another formative moment for my id. How about an AU where the Jaegers are sentient and can drift with their pilots?
I love me some silver foxes (and will probably say that more than once), so I am very firmly on Team Hot Dads.
Fix-it fic in which Stacker gets to the life pod in time or in which he never had to sacrifice himself; a pre-movie get together; post movie retirement fic… give me any and all of it. Seriously love the idea of a permanent telepathic link between pilots, and of course these two fought together. Give me long term lovers who are never out of each others’ heads, no matter the distance, or the first time they stepped into the drift together. Herc tracing Stacker’s scars from when he brought his jaeger home alone. If you can think of an AU deserving of these two mature, kick-ass, competent men (uh-oh, methinks I spot a theme here), go for it.
Our Flag Means Death
Blackbeard | Edward Teach/Stede Bonnet (OFMD)
Blackbeard | Edward Teach/Stede Bonnet/Israel Hands (OFMD)
This is a new fandom for me, and as such, I’m making grabby hands at everything and anything. I adore the fluff potential of Stede/Ed. So much twoo wuv and epic smut and Stede introducing Ed to all the finest things, whilst Ed teaches Stede how to be the best Gentleman Pirate he can be.
When you throw the hot mess that is Izzy into this, however, the dynamic takes a sharp left turn into the bottomless pit of angst that Izzy is most definitely capable of. I do not know why I like this miserable, praise kink on legs, but I do and ugh, I don’t even think I can begin to be coherent about the three of them together.
Drag them into the modern day or yeet them into space, I honestly don’t care. Just give me disgustingly sweet saccharine love between Ed and Stede, or throw Izzy into bed with them and have them teach him what it actually means to be touched by someone who cares for you. Because you know beneath that slimy, prickly, miserable skin is someone who is so in love with Ed that he can’t think straight. And maybe Stede sees this, and instead of the usual ‘oh no, someone else loves my man, I will flounce off and fling myself into the sea’, he’s mature enough to go, ‘hmm, maybe there’s a work around we can do here’. OT3 is always the answer to a love triangle.
Crossover Fandom - Israel Hands (Our Flag Means Death) & Creator's Choice Of Muppets (Muppet Treasure Island)
Look, I don’t know either, and this is my only request for just comics/art. But the idea of Izzy being the only human in a cast of pirate Muppets? Fricking genius.
Likes: Fluff, smut, mundane domesticity. Airships/steampunk, spaceships/sci-fi. Older characters/silver foxes, happy ever afters, suit porn, competence and loyalty and protectiveness and found family. Enemies to friends to lovers. I am a trope ho. Give me different standards of beauty and attractiveness. Orgasm delay is fun. Denial is not.
Smut likes: Whilst I'm not a big fan of BDSM in fandom, I very much enjoy inflicting a bit of orgasm delay (although not outright denial!) and multiple orgasms. Please give me inventive sexual positions, alien or robotic genitalia, enthusiastic 'we're not dead' sex, OT3s, telepathic connections, love and lust at first sight, sentient machines, joyful consummation after epic pining (requited, of course), use of fingers but not fists, mouths everywhere except rimming, sweet-soft-tender “I’m going to take care of you" sex, and coming so hard they pass out. Singly, or in whatever inventive combination the muse demands of you.
DNW: A/b/o dynamics/mpreg/lactation; Noncon/incest/underage; BDSM, D/s or manipulative power dynamics, roleplaying; Excessive gore/violence; Scat/watersports/snowballing/eggpreg; Character death or chronic illness (unless it’s canon and you’re going to fix it - I’m looking at you, MCU), unhappy or bittersweet endings; High school/teenager/de-aged AUs (I have teens in the house, ‘nuff said)
After several recent conversations about what DNWs actually cover, I thought I'd just clarify that I don't mind passing mentions of things like noncon and graphic violence and BDSM, I just don't want stories about them. You can talk about someone suffering emotional abuse, feature female pregnancy and lactation, have them play DnD. Please leave the ABO universe out it entirely, ditto scat etc, but you can talk about character death as long as it's either an OC, a past/canonical character loss or someone you're going to bring back to life! A bittersweet ending means different things to different writers, but anything that isn't entirely happy or hopeful or bright isn't something I really want to read. I am a sap and a fluff fiend - you can get as angsty as you like, but for the love of all things Stan Lee, please finish the fic with something upbeat, even if it's a "and he vowed they would make this work" kind of thing. Real life is depressing enough right now.
Whatever you choose to write, have fun with it! If you enjoy writing it, it's going to be a good read XD
